I played Heroes 3 years ago but the first game is hardcore and unbalanced between armies. In scenario 5 "Castle Ironfist", I play Queen Lamandra (witch) and I can't defeat Ironfist's army because of too many heroes with huge armies. I found a walkthrough on Youtube, but it's for a mage and I don't have dragons or a dimension door spell ! Necropolis: Really strong (banned along with Conflux), but not exactly beginner friendly in terms of exploiting it's advantages. Relatively cheap building costs. Stronghold: Not an easy choice for beginners. The essence of Stronghold is a blitzkrieg strategy, which fits the theme of the town. On first day of week Gelu takes all available Centaurs, Pegasi and Elves (if enough gold) and goes to attack Tormina (on the way flags Sawmill near road), conquers it on day 3-4 (has level 1-5 creature generators built, but no Citadel) and beats any hero who might left town to regain mines (if wanted, could be a tactic to have gelu finish a day
HoMM 3 is really better in almost everyway than 5. More complex factions, great stories and maps. Weirdly the AI is better in 3. I think the art style holds up better also. 5 is a good game but 3 is probably the best game in its genre ever. I highly suggest buying it on GOG and then getting the HD Mod instead of getting the HD version on steam.
HoMM3 beginner cheat sheet. HoMM3. A friend of mine recently started playing HoMM3 for the first time and wanted some help learning the basics of the game. While nowhere near a strategy guide, I put together a spreadsheet for him so he could learn the strengths and weaknesses of some of the rudimentary components of the game.
Cost: 600. Growth: 3. The only ranged unit in the Necropolis city, at the same time being on of the most powerful shooters in the game. They have high attack attribute and damage, while at the same time their defense is above average. Power Liches are given a huge boost to health and increased damage, as well as speed. Dungeon and Academy are the best choices for magic. A hero with just black dragons is almost a sure thing to cast before the enemy, and you can use high level spells with no regard for friendly fire. Academy has the most spells available thanks to the library, and the heroes are magic based too. regardless, it's very, very, very map dependent. In general though, the game is mostly about optimizing your build. Many of the factions like Castle and Conflux are also relatively overpowered, which makes winning games substantially easier (once again, heavily depending on the map). Tower. Ranged units. Forge the destinies of mighty and magical heroes, leading fantastic and ferocious creatures in a game that still stands today as the landmark opus of the Might & Magic: Heroes’ franchise. Heroes of Might & Magic III is a turn-based strategy game, originally released in February 1999. Black dragons ;-) + Inferno: Offensive troops with two non-retaliated attacks and good specials. + Necropolis: Good specials, cover of darkness structure. Second, for the heroes: I prefer might heroes to the magic ones, because in most cases the might ones still get some experience in magic. I don't know if any one here still plays this awesome game (Heroes of Might&Magic 3, that is), but if you do, I have a problem beating a certain map. This map is available in Shadow of Death expansion and its name is Back for Revenge. This map also comes in its "Allies" variation. Needles to say, the map is pretty much impossible. And you can do that in any round again. (source: Ye olde sorcerer (Florian Trombach)) -If you prefer magic heroes, then it is a very wise strategy to build up your magic guilds very fast -- meaning that you build them up to at least 4th level before you decide which magic school you will build your heroes' skill up to expert in.
